Candida Overgrowth is one of the many fungi that dwell inside and all over the human body. It is named after the genus of yeast candida.
The Candida yeast is found in small quantities in certain parts of the body such as the mouth, intestines and on the skin. Normal amounts of this fungi in and on the body does not pose any problems or threats of illness. However, when the Candida fungi start growing at an uncontrollable pace, it leads to a condition called candidiasis. This disease is often referred to as Candida in short. Candida is one of the most common causes of fungal infections that humans suffer from.
As mentioned before, the human body functions perfectly well with normal levels of Candida. However, it is only when the overgrowth creates illnesses such as yeast infections, oral thrush, and chronic fatigue, among others, that you know that the fungi have increased more than it should.
One of the most common reasons causing candidiasis is a weakened immune system. The healthy bacteria in our body keeps the levels of candida in control. However, in case of illness, when our immunity is compromised, the amounts of healthy bacteria go down in the body, which leaves the body exposed to the threats of increased amounts of the candida fungi. This happens particularly when the patient is on antibiotics. This is also one of the reasons why doctors prescribe probiotics along with antibiotics to improve gut flora.
