Ozone therapy – has been shown to break down the integrity of the bacterial cell envelope by oxidizing the phospholipid membrane. In fungi, such as candida and yeast infections, ozone stops fungal growth at certain stages. With viruses such as the common cold and flu, which affects millions in the US alone annually, the O3 impairs the viral capsid and prevents the reproductive cycle of the virus by creating lipid peroxidation. This is a process where free radicals steal electrons from the cell membrane leading to cell vulnerability. The weak enzyme coatings on cells that make them vulnerable to invasion by viruses make them susceptible to oxidation and elimination from the body, which then replaces them with healthy cells.
Ozone increases the production of interferon, a group of signaling proteins made and released by host cells in response to the presence of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and tumor cells. Ozone also increases the output of tumor necrosis factor (family of cytokines that can cause cell death) and interleukin-2. The production of interleukin-2 (a protein that regulates the activities of white blood cells that are responsible for immunity), creates a domino effect for an immunologic reaction leading to healing.
Additionally, moderate oxidative stress activates nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Nrf2 then stimulates the creation of antioxidants, which produce Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione S-Transferase (GSTr), and Heat Shock Proteins (HSP). These free antioxidants protect cells from oxidation and inflammation and can obstruct chronic oxidative stress. Activation of Nrf2 results in protection against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
Nrf2 has been also shown to be involved in DNA repair. One study found that Nrf2 is significantly linked with DNA repair. The Nrf2-dependent antioxidant response has been shown to protect against oxidative-stress related diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's), cardiovascular disease, emphysema, and the aging process.
Ozone is inexpensive and no patentable and it is regretful that local Health Authorities, continuously concerned by the increased medical costs, do not want to take advantage of this inexpensive procedure. It is commonly used in Europe, Russia, and China where most of the patients are treated with ozone therapy. Ozone is a fairly simple and safe procedure that involves extraction of your own blood cycling through an ozone generator and passed back into your body for maximal health benefits. An ozone sauna also provides ozone absorption through skin pores for maximal effectiveness and is non-invasive.
